Exploring Montana's Majestic Crazy Mountains: A Scouting Report. Last weekend, two of the Montana Vet Program team members embarked on an unforgettable journey into the heart of Montana's rugged wilderness for a scouting report - the Crazy Mountains. We took this trip as a scouting trip for a future Veteran Lead Therapeutic Adventure Trip (VLTAT). Nestled in the breathtaking landscape of the Treasure State, the Crazies, as they're affectionately known, offered us a challenging yet rewarding hiking experience like no other.
Elevation Extremes
Our adventure began at a humble 6000 feet of elevation, where we left the comforts of civilization behind and delved into the untamed beauty of the Crazy Mountains. Thank you to the two Air Force volunteers who helped us with vehicles. Over the course of our expedition, we would ascend to dizzying heights, with our highest point reaching a staggering 10,000 feet above sea level. The dramatic elevation changes added an extra layer of excitement to our journey, promising breathtaking vistas and thrilling hiking trails.
A Tight Schedule, But Worth It
With packed schedules and limited time, we regretfully couldn't explore all the enticing fishing spots that dotted our path. The Crazy Mountains are renowned for their pristine lakes and rivers teeming with trout, making it a paradise for anglers. However, our tight itinerary ensured that we stayed on course, pushing our limits and savoring the beauty of this remarkable range. It did rain on us for the first 44 hours of the trip. This added a level of suffering that we are very familiar with, and we welcome with open hearts. We all know that suffering is what helps make us stronger. #sufferwell
A Feat of Endurance
Over 21 miles and 47 hours, we pushed ourselves to the limit, conquering steep ascents and treacherous descents. Our bodies were tired, our feet sore, but the sense of accomplishment was immeasurable. There's something uniquely fulfilling about pushing your physical and mental boundaries in the wilderness, and the Crazy Mountains offered the perfect backdrop for such an endeavor. It is a special thank you to Alpen Fuel for providing a large amount of our calories every morning in order to support our mission. If you are a veteran you can message us (scroll to the bottom of the page for our contact form) for a discount code for their amazing breakfast meals.
Back to Civilization
Finally, with aching but satisfied bodies, we returned to our vehicle. Our adventure in the Crazy Mountains had come to an end, but the memories would last a lifetime. As a fitting reward for our efforts, we headed to a local dive bar, a hidden gem known for serving the best burgers in town.
In Conclusion
Our hike in the Crazy Mountains was more than just a physical journey; it was a soul-stirring experience. From the lowlands to the peaks, we traversed diverse landscapes, and witnessed stunning vistas. The Crazy Mountains of Montana offer a wilderness adventure like no other, and we will be taking a trip here with veterans in the near future.
